about
I cook, and cabbage is the cheapest veggie. Every poor grandma knows about cabbage and even though my parents couldn't really cook, I'm getting to know this one in particular in my poverty. This song is also about women, and money. And it's about how poor people just want cabbage, and I hate austerity politics trying to take away the basic things that sustain people in poverty. I always give 2 singles to people asking for money on the street and I've busked, everyone should give a little more and eat some cabbage. When you cook it wrong and gotta eat it, that's poor people shit that builds the kind of character most middle class people don't have. It's the asshole vegetable that you have to fight with just to make it edible, great metaphor for life.

Cabbage
They just want Cabbage
Get your hands up if you got in for free
I'mma need a sawbuck next time you see me
I ain't greedy feed the needy get a shirt, get a CD
this ain't no motherfucking charity
Call me Cab Calloway, cause I got a check today,
then I got a text today, from your old ex, she say
that she want sex so I pull up in a rented Chevrolet
neck, back, neck, back, neck, Andale!
Ah di ah di ah di ah, Oh di oh di oh di oh
if you want to talk about your bills, bitch, I got my own
Banjo trap, Trash grass, Honkey talk, Hick Hop
call it what you want to call it. I just open up shop.
Cabbage
They just want Cabbage
Call me Cab Calloway, cause she caught the KT
my brother ain't Elwood, no, this ain't the 80's
My mama couldn't raise me, creamed corn instead of gravy,
fuck a job, I'm lazy, fuck a fade, I ain't shady
fuck sleep, I'm crazy
I'm so hungry it ain't funny, last girlie was a bunny
hippedy hopped up on me, pushed it up against my tummy
then she made my eggs runny so I showed her the door
I miss your mom cause they don't make 'em like that anymore
grab a bucket grab a mop, never ever call the cops
grab a bucket grab a mop, never ever call the cops
maybe I'm an easy mark, comes from getting what you want
easy come, easy go, blow it off, get some more

Gabriel Kahane is often compared to Sufjan Stevens and Rufus Wainwright (both of whom he’s collaborated with in the past). It’s a lot to live up to, but to that already high bar I’ll add Ben Folds and Randy Newman, if only for Kahane’s similar sense of musical theatre, playful storytelling and ability to set … Continue reading Album of the Week: Where are the Arms → Bandcamp Album of the Day Dec 19, 2011
